Ten Mahavidyas
The Ten (known as Dus in hindi) Mahavidyas, also known as the
Wisdom Goddesses, are a group of powerful deities in Sanatan Dharma
embodying distinct aspects of the divine feminine. The ten
transcendental forms of Adi Shakti are a guide to spiritual awakening.
The term comes from the Sanskrit, Dus, meaning “ten,” Maha, meaning
“great” and Vidya, meaning “knowledge.”
The Mahavidyas represent a spectrum of wisdom and power, ranging
from fierce and destructive to gentle, beautiful and nurturing.
Together, they symbolize the complete journey of spiritual awakening,
surpassing dualities to reveal the ultimate truth.
The forms of Dus Mahavidyas are supposed to have given Lord Shiva a
spiritual awakening, and these manifestations of Divine Mother bring
about a shift in energies and divine enlightenment to the seeker.
The ten essential facets of the Supreme Cosmic Mother's personality
can be referred to as the Ten Great Feminine Cosmic Wisdoms.
However, each Goddess plays a distinctive cosmic function in
maintaining the harmony of the universe.
The traditional sequence of the ten Goddesses is:
• Kali – The Wisdom of Time and The Night of Eternity
• Tara– The Wisdom of Void and The Night of Anger
• Tripura Sundari – The Wisdom of Absolute Splendor
• Bhuvaneshwari – The Wisdom of Space and The Night of Perfect
Realization
• Tripura Bhairavi – The Wisdom of Death and The Night of Destiny
• Chhinnamasta – The Wisdom of Sacrifice and The Night of
Courage
• Dhumavati – The Wisdom of Deprivation and The Night of
Frustration
• Baglamukhi - The Wisdom of Instantaneous Stopping
• Matangini– The Wisdom of Domination and The Night of Illusion
• Kamalatmika – The Wisdom of Perfect Happiness and The Night of
Paradise
The Mahavidyas offer profound spiritual lessons. They symbolize the
balance of opposites—creation and destruction, beauty and ferocity,
abundance and renunciation. Each goddess teaches a unique path to
cross the limitations of the mind and attain self-realization.
The Mahavidyas are states of spiritual awakening that we will
experience within our own minds and hearts along the course of our
journey back to the Divine.
By understanding and honoring these Wisdom Goddesses, one can
embrace the totality of existence and uncover the deeper truths of life.
Their teachings remind us that wisdom, in all its forms, is the key to
transcending the illusions of the material world and connecting with
the divine.
If you wish to fulfil all of your human life's desires, from birth to
salvation after death, worship Dus Mahavidhya.
The ten Mahavidya are Mother Nature's superpower and the
foundation of the universe. As the master and shakti of the ten cardinal
directions, they are involved in all aspects of the universe and have
control over the nine planets.
Seekers with a devotional inclination can approach these forms with an
energy of love, respect, and growing closeness.
Along the journey to enlightenment, these same forms can symbolize
different stages of inner illumination for a knowledge-driven
practitioner.
The Mahavidyas serve as spiritual directors, helping devotees navigate
through the complexities of existence and achieve liberation (moksha).
Worshipping them is believed to grant wisdom, strength, and spiritual
elevation.
